PSV suffered an incredibly unexpected 3-1 defeat against PEC Zwolle on Saturday afternoon, upending the Eredivisie name race. PEC’s Bulgarian star Filip Krastev stole the show with two fine goals and an assist, while PSV captain Luuk de Jong held on one night after missing a very important penalty.
The problems started early for Peter Bosz’s team at the MAC3Park stadium. Just two minutes later, Jerdy Schouten lost the ball, allowing Krastev to dribble to the edge of the area and hit a brilliant shot against the post, leaving Walter Benitez helpless. PSV had a hard time responding, but Johan Bakayoko, despite everything, equalized in the 25th minute, after a timely cross from Ivan Perisic.
PSV had a golden opportunity to take the lead a half-time later, however, De Jong missed his penalty after a foul on Perisic. pec Zwolle took credit for the defeat before half-time, with Krastev going home afterwards from a free space in the corner in the 38th minute.
Despite a late push from PSV, including a Pepi header that hit the crossbar, Krastev sealed the victory in stoppage time, assisting Dylan Vente for the third goal. This marked PSV’s third Eredivisie defeat of the season, leaving the title race wide open. With Ajax able to close the gap to one point with a win against Heerenveen on Sunday, PSV now turns their focus to a crucial Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday. Meanwhile, PEC Zwolle move up to 17th in the table, seven points off the drop zone.
