WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue coach Jeff Brohm returned a presumptive positive result to the COVID-19 team’s daily antigen testing protocols on Sunday, the school announced.
The soccer program awaits confirmation of a PCR test, which can take up to 24 hours.
According to the press release, Brohm informed his training team and team on Sunday afternoon and lately he is at home in isolation.
Brohm and the boilermakers are expected to begin the 2020 season, along with the rest of the Big Ten on Saturday. Purdue receives Iowa at Ross-Ade Stadium.
The Boilermakers were practicing at the time they issued the press release.
Brohm, who is entering his fourth season with the Boilermakers, is scheduled to hold his weekly press convention on Monday with a Zoom call.
Purdue and other Big Ten systems began testing their players on September 30 before the 2020 season.
Brohm is the first school football coach to test positive for COVID-19.
On Wednesday, Nick Saban of Alabama tested positive for the virus, but had no symptoms similar to COVID-19. Saban moved home after receiving the positive test.
Saban tested negative on two more tests on Thursday and Friday in another lab, but cleared up after Saturday’s negative effects.
“According to the SEC Medical Advice and Return to Activity Working Group Protocol and with the approval of the University of Alabama Health and System Safety Working Group, Coach Saban is medically legal to resume operations safely immediately,” said Dr. Jimmy Robinson, the Medical Fix team in a past week.
“During today’s evaluation, Coach Saban remains absolutely asymptomatic. To address the possibility of false positives, follow-up tests from the SEC Medical Guidance and Return to Activity Working Group to erase the individual’s return to activity. This protocol requires 3 negatives. PCR tests with 24 hours difference”.
Florida coach Dan Mullen announced Saturday that he took the COVID-19 test.
