What a season RB Leipzig has had in the Champions League.
The German outfit have not been also-rans in Europe’s premier competition in recent years. They reached the knockout phase in four of the last five seasons, including a run to the semi-finals in 2019/20.
Its purpose at the beginning of the existing crusade of qualifying for the elimination levels again, more realistic through the eliminatary level play-offs.
Instead, Leipzig crashed and burned. A pitiful record of six losses in six games means their fate has already been sealed. Even a bombing position is not successful for Marco Rose’s men.
What has gone wrong? It should be pointed out that Leipzig were handed a tough draw, with games against Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, Celtic, Inter and Aston Villa. Most of their matches have been close, with five of their six defeats coming by a one-goal margin.
On paper at least, upcoming duels with Sporting CP and Sturm Graz look more winnable than some of those encounters, but the damage has already been done.
It’s an old Leipzig team. Lately they are fifth in the Bundesliga and have a war between themselves to qualify for the next edition of the Champions League.
Leipzig are a streaky side. They began the campaign with an eight-game unbeaten streak in the league, before going on to take one point from the next 12 available. Leipzig blow hot and cold, which does not help when they are facing stronger opponents in Europe.
Sporting CP, on the other hand, remain in the mix for a play-off place. Finishing between ninth and 24th is sufficient to extend a team’s participation beyond the league phase, and the Portuguese outfit are currently 17th.
These last few weeks have been eventful for Sporting. Ruben Amorim left for Manchester United in November, and former B-team manager Joao Pereira took over first-team affairs.
However, Pereira only lasted until Christmas after a brightness of effects in his six weeks in Helm.
A win here for Sporting would probably confirm their place in the play-offs with a game to spare. That is what Borges will be aiming for in his first ever match as a Champions League manager.
Will RB Leipzig or Sporting CP come out on top in this Champions League clash on Wednesday?
There is no longer any option of a team in the Champions League that falls in the Europa League, a comfort prize that has been eliminated with the move to a stage of the league.
This could have an effect on several matches that will take place this week and next. RB Leipzig, for example, has nothing tangible left to play.

Of course, the Rose team has its own professional pride, but it’s not as hard a motivation as Sporting CP’s willingness to access the holds.
The Portuguese league leaders have found form in recent times, and Borges began to regain confidence on the field. Sports can do their job at the Red Bull Arena.
⚽ Tip: Sporting CP Wins 50/21 with SBK ⚽
This bet would have paid 4 of the six RB Leipzig Games in the Champions League to date, as well as in the last 3 European tasks of the CP.
The tension is out of RB Leipzig and this can give a contribution to open play. The hosts are free to take dangers knowing that the final results don’t matter.
Leipzig is not, namely, convincing defensive in times. They have sent 12 objectives in their last 4 outputs of the Bundesliga, for example.
The game was not like this on defense since Amorim left. A 4-4 draw with Vitoria de Guimaraes earlier this year illustrates this.
It’s an entertaining encounter in Germany.

It was widely speculated that Viktor Gyokerres would be the subject of several rules in the winter window, but it seems that the CP Sport striker will remain in position until at least the summer.
That is fantastic news for a club that faces a real title battle with both Porto and Benfica, the two other clubs that complete Portugal’s ‘big three’.
Gyokerres, who is a target for Arsenal and Manchester United, among others, is enjoying a magnificent season.
The Swedish foreigner has scored 33 goals in 31 games in all competitions. Maybe Wednesday reaches 34, and even more.
