Real Madrid 1-1 RB Leipzig (2-1 on aggregate): Los Blancos reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League

Real Madrid were far from convincing, but tonight they held RB Leipzig at bay to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

As in the first leg, the Germans had more chances, but they were to blame for failing to finish well before Willi Orban’s equaliser on the night after Vinicius Junior added to Brahim Diaz’s goal in the first leg.

Madrid were slow in the first half as Xavi Simons, Orban and Lois Openda were all suspended.

Real Madrid picked up speed in the second half and in the end did what they had to do to progress to the next round despite several missed chances by their opponents.

Seeking their 15th Champions League title, Real Madrid took the lead thanks to a goal from Vini on a counterattack in the 65th minute.

Orban levelled the score 3 minutes later with a header to set up a tense final minutes that included a shot that hit Dani Olmo’s crossbar.

Madrid reach their consecutive quarter-finals, having reached the semi-finals in all 3 seasons.
