Another disgusting video of Atletico Madrid fans engaging in racist behaviour towards Vinícius Júnior released on Wednesday, in which the star striker calls for punishment for those who were recorded singing “Vinícius chimpanze” in Spanish.
Vinícius has faced racial abuse in Spain, in addition to city-wide rivals Atlético fans, who sadly hung an effigy of him on a road last year.
Interestingly, the most recent incident occurred in an attack in which Real Madrid and Vinícius were not even involved, and chants were heard outside Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium before Atletico beat Inter Milan on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League.

LaLiga, the governing body of Atletico and Real Madrid, announced on Thursday that it had opened an investigation into the matter, adding that it would report the “deplorable racist chants” to the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office specialising in hate crimes and discrimination.
“LaLiga is very determined to make football a hate-free space and will continue to relentlessly pursue any attitude of racism, homophobia, violence and hatred,” it said in a statement.
Vinícius, a 23-year-old Brazilian player, said he wanted those affected to be punished, tagging the Champions League account in the X and writing: “I hope you already have an idea of your punishment. “
Although Vinícius managed it himself, hate chants were also reported against him ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League match against Napoli on Tuesday.

Such chants have become the norm for the star striker in Spain, even after playing there for more than six years. In 2022, Atletico fans chanted “Vinícius, you’re a monkey” outside their stadium, which didn’t result in any punishment for the fans. after Spanish prosecutors said it was to identify the perpetrators.
