Real Madrid vs Chelsea LIVE!

The organisational level of the 2023-24 Women’s Champions League began tonight for Chelsea as they travel to Spain for a clash with Real Madrid. It was the first game the Blues have faced since Emma Hayes was unveiled as United’s next manager and it is hoped she can walk away with a fairytale farewell.

That requires Chelsea to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time ever having lost to Barcelona in both the 2021 final and last year’s semi-finals. A run of four wins in a row, scoring 15 goals, set them up well for this tie in Madrid.

However, the score ended at 2-2 thanks to Olga Carmona scoring early through a strong deflection and then taking time after a debatable penalty awarded to Madrid. In between, Chelsea were by far the better team and drew thanks to Niamh Charles before Sam Kerr. Charles then had a goal disallowed for offside on the last kick of the match.

GOAL! Carmona hits opener against run of play

GOAL! Charles leads a leveler

GOAL! Kerr heads home late one

GOAL! Carmona conceded a debatable penalty

22:12 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea were forced to settle for a point to open their Women’s Champions League crusade after a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid.

Missed chances and a controversial refereeing call were ultimately behind the result, the Blues’ first after Emma Hayes season-ending move to the USA job was confirmed.

Olga Carmona scored a deflected first attempt for Los Blancos before Niamh Charles and Sam Kerr turned the game around in favor of the Blues, only for Jessie Fleming to be stopped hard by a delayed play and concede a penalty that Carmona buried at the right time.

10:01 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Probably a good decision, all things considered.

21:53, Marc Mayo

Real Madrid and Chelsea finished tied 2-2 in the Women’s Champions League.

21:53 , Marc Mayo

CHARLES ENDS UP IN THE LONDON POST. . . BUT THE FLAG IS HOISTED!

It’s for Kerr, who was definitely interfering with justice. Good decision.

21:51 , Marc Mayo

Great on Hernandez’s part!

James spotted Kerr with a beautiful ball over the most sensitive and, after a poor first touch, the Australian escaped what seemed like a golden opportunity in one-on-one.

21:49 , Marc Mayo

Berger claimed a cross from Carmona long before Chelsea went back with his front foot and James had a low shot blocked.

21:47 , Marc Mayo

Madrid adjust while Oloffson and Raso update Abelleira and Caicedo.

Then we will have FOUR more minutes, which will start after a yellow card to Sousa for wasting time.

21:45 , Marc Mayo

THAT HAD TO BE!

James hit the crossbar from distance. Fleming shot the rebound wide!

9:44 p. m. , Marc Mayo

La Real did a job of winning reasonable free-kicks against a visiting team frustrated by wasting time and pressure.

21:43 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

The corner drifts back to Kaneryd, who lines up a dipping volley which Rodriguez parries wide well!

21:42 , Marc Mayo

James fed into the right channel of the box and wins a corner.

Chelsea are at the top.

9:39 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Brilliant recovery from Carter after getting beaten all ends up by Caicedo.

The teenager’s run into the box worked very well thanks to the English defender and Chelsea survived.

9:38 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Who’s a winner then?

That crowd is now right: Los Blancos. . .

9:35 p. m. , Marc Mayo

It was Fleming who dove comfortably out of the zone.

There’s not much touch, but it’s a clumsy challenge, probably worthy of a foul. . .

Carmona steps up.

SHE SCORES!

21:34 , Marc Mayo

There is still time for Madrid to get back to normal and Chelsea in the lead.

It’s difficult for a team with so little risk to react after a goal like that.

But Del Castillo picked up the ball on the halfway line. . . It’s a penalty!

21:31 , Marc Mayo

KERR IS GOING HOME!

No wonder Charles is this. . . A very good cross from the left-back was met with a header from Chelsea’s star striker.

The Blues lead!

21:28 , Marc Mayo

Another Madrid change as Bruun departs for Feller up front.

21:26 , Marc Mayo

Fleming plays the play in the still without penalty!

The replays showed that he didn’t have enough strength from Caicedo to justify his downfall.

21:24, Marc Mayo

Lazy smack over the bar from James after doing well with Kerr to win the ball in Real’s half.

21:22, Marc Mayo

Madrid has its chance of the night!

Only 55 minutes after their first, a looping Carmona cross is cleared as far as Del Castillo and Charles blocks her effort wide.

The home fans woke up in the corner, which was well cleared.

9:20 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Carmona, the last Real player to block Kaneryd’s shot at the last moment.

Hayes turns to his bench, Kirby goes for James.

9:16 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Oroz on for Zornoza in Madrid’s midfield.

21:15 , Marc Mayo

Kerr causes problems at the back post from Cuthbert’s recycled ball in, but Madrid hold firm.

There’s part of an hour left and it’s all over!

21:14 , Marc Mayo

Zarnozo shrugged off the ball and Kaneryd gets into the box, but has to settle for a corner as her cross is poked behind.

It will be the seventh for Chelsea, who have conceded one.

21:11, Marc Mayo

This is truly a game from start to finish.

Fleming gets down the left to pick out Kirby, shot well blocked, before another swift move sees Real make a pair of last-ditch interceptions…

21:09 , Marc Mayo

Caicedo and Lawrence were developing a good battle down the left flank of Madrid before a cross is dropped on the line by Berger – the Chelsea goalkeeper quickly snaffles it up though!

21:08 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Kerr burst in after a better pass from Carter. . .

The goalkeeper stands tall and helps keep the one on one away!

21:07 , Marc Mayo

Moments close for Chelsea at their utmost urgency in this half, with Madrid playing with the ball on the ground and perhaps not having the right rhythm.

21:05 , Marc Mayo

Good combination play down Chelsea’s right with a cross that picks out Kerr forcing her into a difficult header… which is on target but saved.

21:02

The players are back out and Chelsea get us going for the second half.

20:59

The only other Women’s Champions League game on at the moment is also at half time.

In Amsterdam, Ajax lead PSG 2-0.

20:56

With a not-so-good point, Emma Hayes will likely need her Chelsea side to pick up where they left off after getting the equaliser.

They largely dominated the property and looked more threatening, it just took a few more clinical touches in the final third.

20:53 , Marc Mayo

Aside from a deflected goal, the hosts didn’t offer enough offense to threaten a big win tonight.

8:50 p. m. , Marc Mayo

A great cross and a great finish.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Nusken latches onto a bad header clear from the corner but she shoots right at the goalkeeper…

And that’s the break.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

Cuthbert and Kirby like the look of this one, just to the right of the D.

It’s the Scotsman. . . Widely blocked! Corner with only one minute added.

8:45 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Toletti late and booked for felling Kaneryd right on the 18-yard line. No doubt about that.

20:44 , Marc Mayo

With Les Bleus back on the map, will they be able to pull off a turnaround before the break?

20:41 , Marc Mayo

BIG HEAD!

It’s no surprise to see the English defence score the goal, even if it’s not their forte.

Lawrence tossed an adorable ball to the back post where Charles deflected off his marker and headed a graceful header into the corner.

We’re level!

20:39 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

First, a beautiful ball from Kirby almost went over Fleming’s head before Charles drilled into the net, Madrid cleared in the scrum towards goal.

20:38 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea don’t have much time left for what would be a confidence draw before the break.

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Carmona fouls Chelsea but there is no cube and Cuthbert clears.

A superb ball in beats pretty much everyone, Kerr included, and it bobbles up for the keeper to collect.

Carmona has stayed on the court, not knowing why, and will continue to play.

20:32 , Marc Mayo

Nusken was the last to direct a goal attempt, which bounced off a Real goal into a corner.

20:29 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Better from Real with Del Castillo holding off multiple tackles before Andres’ ball to pick out Caicedo’s run is just overhit.

Chelsea introduced an attack to surprise the hosts when Kirby spotted Kerr in the box – a well-saved shot just wide of the post!

20:26 , Marc Mayo

Clever ball from Lawrence to Kirby, who has so far operated in the gap, but his pass into the box is clear.

Chelsea’s attack is then ended as Cuthbert fouls Bruun. Harsh one, that.

8:25 p. m. , Marc Mayo

We didn’t see much of Kerr tonight, with Real’s centre-back doing a smart job of being hot with the balls forward.

20:21 , Marc Mayo

LUCK!

Chelsea stepped forward and almost discovered Kerr in the box, but his weak shot was cleared before Kirby could kick.

Charles and Fleming are a wonderful match to create this opportunity.

20:21 , Marc Mayo

Madrid raised their game to the point of Chelsea from the goal, although they probably failed to get past them in the last ten minutes of the match.

Emma Hayes talks to her team about what her team wants to do next.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

Good bite for this game now, as Charles seems to attack with a great 50-50 that Cuthbert follows, and Chelsea places their left-back in the box to win a corner.

The referee tells Carter to get too close to the goalkeeper as the ball falls. . . claimed by Rodríguez.

8:15 p. m. , Marc Mayo

It’s the first move of the game!

It’s a big deterrent now for Chelsea, who are well advanced but want to keep the midfield against a Madrid side that is gaining confidence.

20:10 , Marc Mayo

BRAND CARMONA A GAMA!

Berger’s clearance was not enough and Madrid took the lead on Chelsea in their first genuine attack of the match.

Carmona tries and sends a punch at Bright, leaving the guard trapped!

Kaneryd recovers Carmona’s major down the right from Chelsea, it looks like the start of a battle.

This time there was no ball in the area, it came back to Kirby and the Blues held on.

From back to front, Kirvia inserted with a great route but Carmona’s slide was successful to prevent it.

20:02 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea on the front foot.

Kirby with the ball early on looked wide to the right for Kaneryd who did well to beat two markers before a dangerous cross from Cuthbert. . . crossed the goal and was dealt with.

8:00 p. m. , Marc Mayo

Emma Hayes says her decision to leave Chelsea “touched my heart,” but that her dream job in America was an “opportunity I just couldn’t refuse. “

The 47-year-old was named head coach of the U. S. women’s national team and has become the highest-paid coach in world soccer, thanks to a £1. 3 million-a-year contract.

He will remain in charge of Chelsea until the end of the season and will face his last chance to win the Champions League when Les Bleus face Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday.

Hayes, who won six titles and FA Cups in 11 years at Chelsea, said: “It definitely touched my heart, because I care so much about the players and all the people I’ve built relationships with. But most of all, I’m a challenger.

“We’ve won a lot at Chelsea and I’m very proud of that, and I’m proud of the fact that I can leave this club in a better position and one where I hope to continue competing. But for me, the challenge of competing for the World Cup, the Olympics, the dream of coaching a team that I longed for, I just couldn’t turn it down.

The Champions League has eluded Hayes at Chelsea and he says leading them to European glory in his final season would be a “fairy tale”.
