Red Bull says it is “not aware” of Adrian Newey’s plans to sign up for a rival team in Formula 1, amid reports that he will leave after nearly two decades at RBR.
Newey joined Red Bull in 2006 and the technical director led the design team in the production of cars that won several championships from 2010 to 2013 and then into 2021. Despite Red Bull’s existing dominance, the team has been on the scene for much of this year’s opening season following allegations about team principal Christian Horner’s behaviour towards a colleague.
Following an initial report by German publication Auto Motor und Sport that Newey was willing to leave Red Bull, the BBC said it had verified the claims and that the scenario surrounding Horner was at the heart of his preference for moving elsewhere.
However, when the reports were presented to Red Bull, a team spokesperson said: “Adrian is under contract until at least the end of 2025, we don’t know if he will join the team. “
None of the reports directly link Horner to an express move to a rival, although he has been linked with Ferrari in events in the past, while Aston Martin and Mercedes have also been warned as potential destinations that merit him leaving Red Bull. The BBC also reports that Newey believes he can negotiate an exit before his current contract expires.
If the 65-year-old decides to leave, it would mark a seismic shift in Red Bull’s control team. Newey no longer works full-time in F1, but he has played a pivotal role in Red Bull’s massive success, leading the technical branch. who has delivered the cars that have won 117 races to date, and lately runs the constructors’ championship and the drivers’ championship with Max Verstappen.
Amid the recent controversies involving Horner and the resulting power struggle, Verstappen has preferred to see Red Bull’s key players remain in incredibly transparent positions – notably referring to advisor Helmut Marko – otherwise he warned that he, too, might be open to moving elsewhere.
