They may not have been the excessive zero-pods that were predicted, but Red Bull has brought new sidepod entries for the RB20 to the Suzuka circuit that come with adjustments to the cooling and sidepod intake.
Putting a radical RB20 on track while moving away from last year’s design philosophy and following parts of Mercedes’ ground-effect aero cars from previous years, he reported that Red Bull could move to 0 pods.
Japan, fresher than the first three races on the calendar, is touted as the first race to adopt the new design.
But while Red Bull hasn’t gone down that path, the RB20 sports new side air intakes. In redistributing the inlet spaces for the number one pontoon-mounted heat exchangers, Red Bull, according to the FIA notes, has sought “the maximum effective places in terms of voltage input for the area” with the aim of having “less outlet area, which is beneficial downstream”.
The team, which leads the championship with 4 points, has brought new terrain, terrain edges and a front bonnet to the race.
Ferrari, Carlos Sainz’s second team after the Australian Grand Prix, has a new rear wing and rear suspension. The latter, presented through Sainz as a small replacement at Thursday’s press conference, aims to extend the car’s power.
As for McLaren, they’ve brought a low-cooling front brake duct, while Aston Martin offers an upgrade to the floor and floor edges to pass along with its modified diffuser that features a revised sensitive surface. “Adjustments to the shape adjust the expansion of the diffuser to the characteristics of the flow and to the load generated on the surface,” the FIA report reads.
Mercedes, like Haas, has not made any innovations on track despite the latter’s recent letter to enthusiasts stating that they would upgrade the car faster than anticipated.

Japan, however, is still too early, as the new update will arrive at the next race in China, as he first covered the first European race at Imola in May.
Alpine has upgraded the front wing, front corner and transverse wing as the team aims to score its first championship points, while Williams also has a new transverse wing and rear wing.
