Former New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch has been named the next boss of sister club Red Bull Salzburg, the Austrian has announced.
Current Salzburg coach Marco Rose will leave the club at the end of the season to take charge of Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga next season.
And Marsch, who worked with Ralf Rangnick this season as an assistant at RB Leipzig, has been named his successor, effective at the end of this campaign.
“I am pleased and honoured to be able to work for this fantastic club as the next head coach,” Marsch said in a statement. “I will give everything to continue the incredibly successful jobs here. “
“It’s going to be a new challenge for me, and I can’t wait. “
Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund also issued a saying: “Jesse Marsch is a coach who allows us to continue the path we have taken with determination.
“We have followed his career and evolution very closely over the past few years, and have spoken to others often.
We are absolutely convinced of him both as a professional and as a person. He knows very well our philosophy and our betting football.
Former MLS player with Chivas USA, D. C. United and Chicago Fire, Marsch broke into the ranks of the head coaches of the Montreal Impact, leading them through the 2012 season.
But it was with New York, where he took over in 2015, where the former American foreigner reinforced his reputation, as his team was close to the most sensible in the Eastern Conference.
Marsch led New York to the league record in 2015, capturing the fan shield and won the MLS Coach of the Year award the same season.
He inherits a team accustomed to domestic success, having won Austria’s last Bundesliga crowns and looks set to win a sixth this season.
However, he will be looking to bring more good fortune to Europe, as the club failed to qualify for the organisational stages of the Champions League in its back-to-back name run, falling in the knockout stages this season.
However, Salzburg have played in the Europa League, reaching the semi-finals last season and the knockout stages this season.
