It’s taken a while, but the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC are, in spite of everything, able to renew their rivalry for the first time in 2020.
As the league’s normal season resumes, the two face off Thursday night in Harrison, New Jersey.
The interruption of the normal season in March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, forced Tri-State enthusiasts to wait for the hudson River Derby’s first leg, with no enthusiasts in the stands. The Red Bulls (2-2-1, seven points) have a 7-5-2 record in the series, but only have one win in the last four games. Each won a house assembly in 2019.
The Red Bulls have played since their 2-0 loss to FC Cincinnati on July 22 in the last GROUP-level game of the MLS Is Back Tournament, a result that kept them out of the competition. New York opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Atlanta United, then lost his next two.
“We have to be better, and we have to start by taking on duty and assuming duty,” Coach Chris Armas told the Red Bulls’ official website. “We all need to win. We’re used to winning. Nothing less than that would surprise me.
NYCFC (1-4-0, 3 points) failed to achieve many victories, however, it happened when it scored lately. After losing his first four games of 2020, New York beat Inter Miami 1-0 to earn a place in the knockout round of the MLS is Back tournament. NYCFC then overthrew Toronto FC 3-1 before falling to eventual champion Portland in the quarter-finals.
After all this, New York feels confident in an attack of rivalry that hardly desires an additional means of motivation.
“It’s something special,” NYCFC coach Ronny Deila told the MLS official. “It’s very quiet that we have a quiet head, but competitive legs. Finding the balance between calm and aggression will be Array»
It is known whether NYCFC’s star midfielder Maxi Moralez will have compatibility to play as he is dealing with a calf problem. He has 3 goals and 3 assists against the Red Bulls in his career.
Red Bulls’ Daniel Royer has a purpose this season, however, he scored twice in his team’s 2–1 win over New York last year.
