The New York Red Bulls and Austin FC drew 1-1 Wednesday night in Harrison, New Jersey. A goal against Austin FC allowed New York to score in the 7th minute and Sebastian Driussi equalized in the 44th minute.
New York (7-12-10, 31 points) is now winless in consecutive games after consecutive ties. Austin (9-13-7, 34 points) is winless in 8 consecutive games in all competitions, with their last win coming against Sporting Kansas City on July 15.
Emiliano Rigoni’s goal against his team put the Red Bulls on the board. New York’s John Tolkin put a cross into the box with a loose shot, and teammate Dante Vanzeir’s shot went to midfielder and former Austin FC goalkeeper Brad Stuver.
Rigoni redeemed himself with his corner in the last minute of the first half. Jhojan Valencia directed the corner to Driussi, and the Argentine headed past Carlos Coronel for his goal of the season, leading the team.
New York had plenty of chances to take over the game in the first 45.
The Red Bulls controlled ownership in the first half and made seven shots on the first forty-five shots, while restricting Austin to just one shot on goal.
Elias Manoel had the first chance to score with quality for the Red Bulls in the 2nd minute, but his shot went over the crossbar. Then, at the end of the first half, Tolkin had two chances, unleashing a shot over the crossbar in the 37th. minute and then fired his shot next to the goal in the 41st minute.
Austin FC beat the Red Bulls 4-3 in the other meeting between the two clubs in July 2022.
Next, the Red Bulls will face D. C. United on Saturday, while Austin FC will host the LA Galaxy on Sunday.
