The New York Red Bulls appointed Gerhard Struber as head coach on Tuesday.
Struber, 43, has in the past trained Barnsley FC (2019-20) in England and Wolfsberger AC (2019) and FC Liefering (2017-18) in his local Austria.
He replaced Chris Armas, who was fired last month after a 3-4-2 start to the 2020 season. Bradley Carnell had been interim coach of the Red Bulls (6-7-2, 20 points), which lately ranks in seventh place East Conference.
“I look forward to meeting my new team, I hope it’s too soon,” Struber said in a press release. “We need to pursue very ambitious goals in combination and expand as normal. The challenge of running at MLS makes me proud and gives me great motivation for a wonderful opportunity.
Struber played professionally for thirteen seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga and finished his career with Red Bull Salzburg in 2008.
“Gerhard is a brilliant coach, and we are excited to welcome him to the club,” said Kevin Thelwell, NYRB Athletic Manager. “Gerhard’s taste for the game and his delight in the progression of the youngsters are consistent with our philosophy and above all, as a person, he adapts to our culture. We look forward to him coming here and racing in combination with the objectives that we have set ourselves as a club.
The Red Bulls paid Barnsley an undisclosed payment to free Struber from his current contract, who will enroll in the team until he received his U. S. paint visa.
