An AFC team that could be looking for a new head coach would be very interested in hiring Jon Gruden.
Speaking on “The Las Vegas Raiders Insider” podcast (h/t RaidersBeat. com), veteran Raiders pundit Hondo Carpenter of Sports Illustrated reported that Raiders Mark Davis “would love to bring back” the Super Bowl 37-winning head coach.
“I will tell you that there are a lot of other people who think that Mark Davis, more than [Tom] Brady and Jim Gray, the user he trusts the most is Jon Gruden and would like to bring him back. I listen to several other people. In the league they say that if Jon is willing to drop his lawsuit, they believe the NFL would passively nod to return him and rehire him. . . they all help keep talking about Jon Gruden.
A lot of people think that Jon Gruden’s trial will eliminate Roger Goodell and that will embarrass a lot of other people. . . now that the Nevada courts are proceeding with [Gruden’s lawsuit] and now it’s about eventual discovery, and if he knows anything about the legal system, upon finding out, Jon will be able to ask any questions he needs. It doesn’t even have to be him. You can say, “I need to communicate with this owner, I need to communicate with him. “to this owner, I’d like to reach out to Roger Goodell, or whoever,” and Jon Gruden knows where each and every frame in the NFL is buried.
The 60-year-old returned to the NFL this year as a representative of the New Orleans Saints. He resigned as head coach of the Raiders in 2021 after emails he wrote containing racist, misogynistic and homophobic language were leaked.
Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001 before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom he led to a Super Bowl name in 2002. After a decade away from the wings, he agreed to a 10-year, $100 million contract with Davis for Coach. The Raiders again.
Gruden is 117-112-0 as a head coach. He went 60-57 over his two stints with the Raiders.
