Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian has agreed to a contract extension to remain with the Longhorns, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who noted that the 50-year-old had in the past turned down interviews with two NFL teams. .

Sarkisian has been the head coach at Texas since 2021. He has led the Longhorns to a 38-17 record, going 25-5 over the last two seasons. The Longhorns made the College Football Playoffs in 2023 and 2024, falling at the time of the semifinals.
Last year’s Texas team earned the Big 12 name before taking the third position in the CFP. This year’s team won the SEC Championship Game and earned the fifth seed, beating Clemson and Arizona State before losing to Ohio State. The Longhorns are also the only team to have Red PPC in the past two years.
It’s no surprise that Sarkisian has drawn interest from NFL teams given Texas’ performance over the past two years. He has a two-decade resume that also includes stops in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders (2004, quarterbacks coach) and the Atlanta Falcons (2017-2018, offensive coordinator).
However, it is evident that Sargsyan is committed to Texas. That X post from Thursday also implies Sargsyan’s loyalty to the school.

The contract extension seals it, of course. Ultimately, it’s easy to see why Sarkisian is sticking around, given the good luck he’s had in Austin. And Texas evidently sought it out given the way the Longhorns behaved under his watch.
Sarkisian is now in the game for the long haul as he strives to give Texas its first national name since 2005.
