BERLIN (AP) – Understudy Marco Reus and Erling Haaland ended Borussia Dortmund’s barren streak at Hoffenheim with a 1-0 Bundesliga victory on Saturday.
Dortmund had won any of the last five games among the teams, but Haaland ran with a ball led by the midfielder and kept his composure in front of the Hoffenheim goalkeeper before crossing selflessly to give Reus a touch in the 76th minute.
It’s an unresealed game for visitors, the first of seven games in 21 days, adding Tuesday’s opening Champions League match in Lazio and next week’s Ruhr derby against Schalke.
Coach Lucien Favre decided to keep Haaland, Reus, Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro on the bench at first, and it was the house team that had the most productive possibility at first thanks to Mijat Gacinovic.
Gio Reyna and Thomas Meunier approached Dortmund in the first half, the latter hitting the crossbar at 37, before Sebastian Rudy wasted an opportunity for Hoffenheim.
Favre brought Reus and Haaland for the useless Jadon Sancho and Julian Brandt in ’64, then Bellingham and Guerreiro in ’75. Haaland created Reus for the winner a minute later. Bundesliga groups will use five alternates this season.
Freiburg and Werder Bremen tied 1-1, Hertha Berlin lost 2-0 at home to the ascended Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen won at Mainz 1-0 and Yussuf Poulsen scored a contfinisher for the purpose of the season for Leipzig to finish Augsburg Victoria’s best start 2-0. Dani Olmo sent the ball and Poulsen connected with a volley to pass the ball over the goalkeeper and inside the second suit.
Later, Bayern Munich visited Arminia Bielefeld, who was expected to be the first promoted Bundesliga team to defeat the Bavarian force since 2010, and Borussia Monchengladbach received Wolfsburg.
