Sam Mewis signs with Manchester City ahead of WSL season

Midfielder Sam Mewis has signed with Manchester City ahead of the Women’s Super League season.

Mewis, who was a member of the U.S. national team that won the World Cup last summer in France, arrives in Manchester City from the North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League.

“What excites me is that I will expose myself to a perhaps different style. It will be smart for my development, be exposed to anything new and get out of my area of convenience a little bit.” Mewis told the Manchester City online page in an interview published Monday: “And I’m very happy to have the hope of having an impact. I need to help the team win and see if I can be part of the team.”

Mewis, 27, played for the national team and scored 18 goals. She has 14 goals and 11 assists since moving from Western New York Flash to Courage.

The NWSL recently completed its one-month Challenge Cup tournament in Utah. The Courage, a two-time protective league champion, was eliminated in the quarter-finals through the Portland Thorns.

Because she is an assigned player in the NWSL, Courage retains Mewis’ rights.

“This move to Manchester City is vital in many ways,” Courage coach Paul Riley said in a statement. “She feels uncomfortable again, her role will change, other tactics, and she will be further shaped as she strives to become the world’s most productive box-to-box midfielder. One Olympic year and you can play 20 matches.” over the next six to seven months, which is incredibly valuable.

Mewis will use number 22 for Manchester City. The WSL 2020-21 season opens on the weekend of 5-6 September at the newly promoted Aston Villa.
