Schedule Adjustments for Manchester Trams Due to Cracked Rail

Timetable adjustments will be made to parts of Manchester’s Metrolink network from next Monday 12 February in a bid to improve the reliability of the network, while broken tracks near the Victoria tram are being repaired.

To ensure more reliable and on-time service for Metrolink throughout downtown, the number of streetcars that run through Market Street and Shudehill will be changed. However, trams will continue to prevent access to the Place de la Bourse.

Trams on the East Didsbury to Shaw and Crompton service will run every 12 minutes between East Didsbury and Exchange Square only at peak times (7 a. m. to 7 a. m. ). m. a 8 p. m. ) instead of going to Shaw and Crompton. Trams between East Didsbury and Rochdale in the city centre will also run every 12 minutes via Market Street and Shudehill, with more dual trams heading to Rochdale.

There have been no trams since Jan. 17 between Exchange Square and Victoria after a track defect was discovered at one of the specialist crossings. This has forced the removal of the crossing and it is being repaired at the manufacturer’s facilities.

As the crossing point was removed, the facility cannot operate between the Exreplace Square and Victoria tram stops. However, the next schedule update will affect passenger service and will remain in effect until further notice. Before taking a trip, passengers should check the latest tram departure times and the latest information at the Transport for Great Manchester (TfGM) Travel Alert Centre.

Danny Vaughan, Head of Metrolink at TfGM, said: “I would like to warmly thank riders for their patience while maintenance is being carried out.

“Since the initial discovery of the faulty rail, our number one priority has been to ensure reliable and safe service. However, we recognize that there have been issues with punctuality in recent weeks.

“By introducing this new style of service and reopening Exchange Square, we hope to provide a more reliable service on the affected routes and double Oldham and Rochdale for our passengers. ”
