Scholarship honors former Eagles football coach Ron Case

A new scholarship was established at Carson-Newman University in honor of former Eagles football coach Ron Case and his wife Joan. Case’s adventure to the banks of Mossy Creek and beyond is ordinary and an inspiration to many of those he served and trained. And that is what encouraged them to create this scholarship. Case was not a typical college student when he entered Carson-Newman in the late 1960s. At 31, Case was more than 10 years older than some of his fellow freshmen. But age wasn’t the only difference. He came to Mossy Creek after serving his country for thirteen years in the United States Marine Corps, as well as fighting in Vietnam. To make up for his time, Case earned his bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman and his master’s degree from Knoxville in just 4 years. Array While a full-time student pursuing a dual degree, he also served as defensive coordinator for the Eagles football program. . After graduating, Case’s coaching career took many turns and affected student-athletes across the country. He was head football coach at Knox Fulton High School and returned to Carson-Newman as head coach and athletic director in 1978 and 1979. He was an assistant coach at Maryville College, West Texas State, the University of Richmond, the University of Mississippi . , Vanderbilt University, Louisiana State University, and the University of Alabama. Case also spent five years on the staff at the University of North Carolina under Carson-Newman alumnus Carl Torbush. Through all the years, the hard work, the long hours and the moves, Joan stood by Coach Case. It is also about honoring her role in the effect she had on so many student-athletes and the walk of Christ they modeled as they followed God’s path in their lives. For this reason, the scholarship, designed to provide monetary assistance to Carson-Newman student-athletes, is named after Ron and Joan.
