Scott McDonald has revealed that an hour-long verbal exchange with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers blew him away as he searched his own path in that direction.
The Hoops hero, who also played for Motherwell, Dundee United and Partick Thistle during his time in Scotland, is the head coach of Australian club Gold Coast Knights. He finished a hat-trick in his second full term in charge thanks to a Queensland series. trophies, and attracted admiring glances from A-League clubs following his NPL Coach of the Year award.
McDonald received his professional licence from the Scottish FA and believes former Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou played a key role in paving the way for Australian coaches. And the existing guy on the Parkhead bench provided more inspiration. He told Football Careers: “Of course I have the ambition to succeed at the highest possible point. If you don’t have those ambitions, what’s the point of doing this work? It’s not in my nature to be content with my lot, I’ll be hungry for more.
“Lately I’ve been in a semi-professional league and when the time comes, I’ll have to move to the next level. I look at Ange Postecoglou and wonder: could it be me later?I think each and every coach has those ambitions.
“It’s been smart to see the success Ange has had at Celtic and Spurs. He will have to have convinced a lot of people because he was an unknown user in the UK. He didn’t have a playing career in Europe and his training roles were all in Australia and Japan.
“But the Australians knew how smart he was. I had a great time at Celtic and I like to come back to earth every time I come back to Glasgow.
“I received my professional license through the SFA and met some familiar faces. I also recently returned for a holiday with family and met Brendan Rodgers, who writes enough to sit with me in his office and talk about football for an hour. wonderful experience.
“Now it’s about being in position for the new season here on the Gold Coast and looking to repeat the good luck we had last year. We’re the team that everybody’s going to target this time, so it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m up for it, the staff is up for it and I know the players will be too.
