The truth of football, and gambling in general, is that an injury in one means an opportunity for the other, as happened on Saturday when Ajax and U. S. alien Sergino Dest debuted in Barcelona’s starting lineup as veteran left-back Jordi. Alba recovered from a hamr tendon injury.
Dest was discovered alongside some of the world’s most important names on the list opposite Getafe, adding Lionel Messi, Antione Griezmann and Gerard Piqué. It is the story of the Catalan club and Dest, who have become the first American in the club’s history to play in the starting line-up for a La Liga match.
The 19-year-old American side was hired to play for Barcelona in the summer play window for Dutch giant Ajax’s $25 million cool. It’s not the first time Dest has looked at the pitch of his new club, when he has. he became a replacement in early October, replacing Alba for the last 15 minutes of a 1–1 draw with Sevilla.
Dest becomes the last young American to be part of a prominent European club, which is a newer type of series with this so-called “golden generation” for the USMNT. Others in this organization come with Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund, Weston McKennie of Juventus, Tyler Adams of RB Leipzig and, of course, Christian Pulisic of Chelsea.
