Seville coach fired for a while

Sevilla fired Italian coach Vincenzo Montella and has re-appointed former coach Joaquín Caparrós until the end of the season.

Montella suffered an eighth La Liga loss in 17 games since succeeding Eduardo Berizzo in December when Sevilla fell in a 2-1 loss to Levante that suffered in the league on Friday.

Former Fiorentina chief, who also stopped by AC Milan in November, was fired four days after the club’s president, José Castro, fired sporting director Oscar Arias, but said the board would remain confident in Montella until the end of the season.

Montella, the first manager to lead Sevilla to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after knocking out Manchester United in the last 16 games, failed to win a match after his 2–1 win at Old Trafford.

They reached the final of the Copa del Rey, where they suffered an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Barcelona last Saturday at Wanda Metropolitano, and Montella leaves them in 7th position in the hope of a place in the Europa League at stake.

“Sevilla FC fired Vincenzo Montella after the team’s poor effects streak since their last win at Old Trafford on 13 March. Since then, Nervión’s team has played nine games without winning, with five losses,” he told seville’s website.

Caparrós had a long training career in Spain and took command of Seville between 2000 and 2005, achieving promotion to the elite in 2001.

“The coach (Caparrós) will lead the team in the 2017/18 setting and then remain connected with the club in a role we had already taken in our minds once the Sevilla sports layout has been reorganized,” Sevilla said in a separate statement.

“Following a call from President José Castro, the experienced coach has not hesitated to settle for the first team as the team tries to qualify for European football in the last 4 games of the season. “
