The world’s oldest club has unveiled plans for a 5,000-seat stadium that will be incorporated into a new sports centre.

Sheffield FC said the former Sheffield Transport Sports Club in Meadowhead would also feature a cricket ground, a football museum and an indoor sports hall.

The facility would be shared with the Sheffield Eagles rugby league team.

Founded in 1857, the club most recently plays its home games in Dronfield, North Derbyshire.

Sheffield FC chairman Richard Tims said the new complex “will become a foreign tourist delight for football and rugby enthusiasts and offer insight into the history and heritage of both clubs”.

“We are pleased to announce our vision for the future: a new stadium in Steel City, a joint venture with the Sheffield Eagles and world-class facilities, which will benefit the entire community,” he said.

“It will be a place where the 3 billion football enthusiasts will be able to make a pilgrimage and pay their respects to the city that gave the world this beautiful game, as well as a place where the local network will be able to use a variety of sports. “

They would meet the criteria of the Football and Rugby League, adhering to the criteria of the Football League and the Super League, the clubs said.

Sheffield Eagles director of rugby Mark Aston said the new pitch would facilitate the Rugby Football League’s new scoring system, which takes into account stadium amenities and league position.

“The Sheffield Eagles are very pleased to be part of this joint venture with Sheffield FC and to be at the heart of this world-class development, which will have at its centre a stadium that meets the Super League criteria for us in our quest to get back to the most sensible flight,” M. Aston said.

Mr Tims, the club had submitted a pre-planning application to Sheffield City Council and the full application was expected by January.

If approved, the club hopes the ground will be built in time for the 2025/26 season.

The BBC has asked the club to check the progress and how it will be funded.
