GENEVA (AP) – Fighting the exclusion of the Champions League under UEFA’s new pandemic regulations, Slovan Bratislava needs the sport’s highest court to save his former opponent from the game later on Wednesday in the next qualifying round.
The Slovan Court of Arbitration had requested an urgent decision to postpone 8:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) Home in Switzerland between Young Boys and KI Klaksvik.
Slovan denied the possibility of playing against Faroe Islands champion KI in a postponed attack twice last week.
The federal government of the Faroe Islands has quarantined two other Slovan players’ groups in the Atlantic Islands after reporting cases of group viruses.
Slovan said all 35 players came back negative after returning to Slovakia. The club has challenged the resolution of the local government in the Faroe Islands, whose resolution force to deal with suspected COVID-19 cases is granted through the recently updated UEFA festival rules.
Slovan was forced to withdraw from the first adjustment of the qualifying circular following a 3-0 defeat on the UEFA appeals committee on Monday.
The resolution led KI to face Swiss champion Young Boys at the time of a tight qualifying schedule for competitions between UEFA clubs. The new season has already been delayed due to the pandemic and this season’s Champions League qualifying circulars were due to begin before the 2019–20 final to be played on Sunday.
Slovan appealed to the CAS to freeze UEFA’s resolution and postpone the Young Boys-KI adjustment “until cas takes a ruling on the merits of the case,” the court said.
Slovan’s greatest appeal will also accelerate. UEFA will draw the third qualifying circular next Monday for the first-rate play-offs, which will be played from 15 to 16 September.
The CAS that UEFA, the Young Boys and KI are the ones who responded to the call “and all have had the opportunity to respond to Slovan’s urgent request.”
UEFA declined to comment with The Associated Press.
Slovan is the moment when the club withdraws from a Champions League qualifier this month, and the time to challenge UEFA at CAS, due to players’ viral infections in pre-match tests required by European festival rules.
Kosovo champion Drita has been quarantined through the Swiss government and has been unable to confront Linfield of Northern Ireland in an initial attack on a stadium next to UEFA headquarters.
Drita, who failed to get a several-day postponement through UEFA to bring in other players, also called for an emergency resolution to the court based in Lausanne. Rejected.
“We are taking the case on its merits,” said Drita’s lawyer, based in Switzerland, Luca Tettamanti, AP.
The Champions League qualifiers are complemented by a two-match tiebreaker played between 22 and 30 September. The draw for the 32-team organization level will take place on October 1.
The groups that will start qualifying for the Champions League next month are Benfica, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiakos and Salzburg.
After his departure from the Champions League, Slovan and Drita are expected to pass to the Europa League tier.
Both will be in Monday’s draw for the Europa League’s circular qualifying matches at the time on 17 September. UEFA’s value for these matches is about 100,000 euros ($118,000) less than Champions League matches.
