MADRID – Unai Emery claimed his first victory as Villarreal’s coach after his team beat Eibar 2–1 at home in La Liga on Saturday.
After being limited to a disappointing tie with the ascended Huesca last week, Villarreal returned home from humble opposition when Kike Garcia put Eibar ahead within five minutes of the first half.
Emery made a double substitution a while later and the adjustments paid off when Gerard Moreno tied in the 63rd minute and then played against Paco Alcácer, who overlooked the goalkeeper to play the net from a closed angle at 71.
Pervis Estupinan scored a third goal in extra time when he fired on the rebound for enormous purpose and his team had to protect themselves deeply in the final minutes to see the victory (report via Richard Martin edited through Ian Chadband).
