A football fan who attacked through opposition thugs and suffered devastating injuries after returning from an away game died five years later.

Cambridge United supporter Simon Dobbin attacked while walking towards the station after his team’s 0-0 draw against Southend United on 21 March 2015.

He suffered permanent brain damage and could not walk or talk.

In 2017, 13 men were convicted for their participation in the attack and 12 of them received sentences totaling more than 42 years.

Mr. Dobbin, 48, died Wednesday at his home in Mildenhall, Suffolk.

Cambridge United said in a publication on its website: “It is with great regret that Cambridge United can verify that we have won the terrible news that Simon Dobbin died at his home this morning.

Chief Inspector Stephen Jennings of essex Police said: “Our mind is with Simon’s circle of family and friends at this very difficult time.

“We’ll review the initial investigation to see if we want to take additional action. “
