CLEMSON, South Carolina (AP) – Several Clemson players used social justice messages on their T-shirts while playing in Virginia on Saturday night, days after Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said he was not in favor of any kind of message about uniforms.
During the warm-ups, receiver Amari Rodgers and offensive part Lyn-J Dixon had the word “Equality” where their names would be. Ass Travis Etienne had the word “Peace” of his name.
Other players had “Love”, “Together”, “Unity” and “Enough” in the warm-ups of their shirts.
The top-ranked Tigers will face Virginia in an ACC championship rematch of the year on Saturday night.
Swinney said his objection to uniform messages is not because he doesn’t approve of players expressing his views on social justice, but because he became a traditionalist when he reached football school uniforms.
The Tigers highlighted social justice issues at several events this season. Players debuted with several helmet stickers with the words “Equality”, “Love”, “Black Lives Matter” and “Ending Racism” in Clemson’s first game in Wake. Forest on September 12.
At home a week later, the team kept their arms closed along the sideline after the first quarter in favor of social justice. Clemson’s painting had the words “Unity” and “Equality” on the side line.
