MILWAUKEE (AP) – Eric Sogard rescued All-Star rapper Josh Hader with the first career home race, a two-run shot that helped the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 on Saturday night.
After Hader walked five of the six batters to the most sensible of the ninth to break out a career lead, Sogard hit Richard Rodriguez (0-2) with no outs in the inning.Jace Peterson the first after a first step.
“Crazy back and forth. Something you probably wouldn’t see from Hader, some kind of opportunity,” Sogard said.I’m glad to be able to pick it up, because he’ll come after us many more times.
“I’m never up there looking to hit circuits. I put a smart swing on it, put a cannon on it, an obvious release angle and what’s not, it’s going to be okay.”
Milwaukee was leading 5-4 when Hader climbed the mound in the ninth inning, walked Erik Gonazalez, retired Cole Tucker and then threw loose passes to Kevin Newman, Josh Bell, Jacob Stallings and Adam Frazier.His last nine pitches failed in the strike zone and he replaced through Devin Williams (2-1), who temporarily exited the inning.
Upon entering Saturday, left-hander Hader had a record 7 out of 7 in stoppage opportunities and had allowed a run or hit throughout the season.
“I didn’t miss much, it’s a shame for a long time, but it’s obvious that you start to fight, they start throwing balls at you, you slow down and you also slow down the referee,” Hader said.”The game is just slowing down. In fact, it accelerates, however, you reach the speed of a turtle when things don’t work properly.”
With Pittsburgh leading 4-3 in the eighth inning, Pirates lefty Nik Turley gave Christian Yelich a tee-over and hit Keston Hiura with a pitch to 3 consecutive batters. Turley retired Jedd Gyorko, who had two home runs for the Brewers. 9-1 at Pittsburgh on Friday, and Ryan Braun, who hit a home run once on Friday.
Avisail García’s floor ball was left alone at third base and went to the wall, scoring Yelich and Hiura.
“It’s 3 attractive half-innings to close the game,” Stallings said.”It sucks.”
Yelich connected a 460-foot home race and Orlando Arcia also connected to Milwaukee.Bell made a run to Pittsburgh, the first since August 5, all three were solitary shots.
Pirate rookie JT Brubaker started his fourth run and made his longest start: he struck out six in five innings, allowing two runs and three hits.
Brewers left-hander Brett Anderson allowed four runs and hits in five innings.
SWING AND MISS
Luis Urias tried to throw a cooler over Sogard’s head while his teammate was conducting an interview after the game, but slipped into the batter circle and crashed to the ground, stopped laughing and ran away.

Pirates: Added RHP Carson Fulmer, claimed Monday’s Tigers waivers, active list and reinstalled RHP Kyle Crick (right shoulder/side muscle distede) from THE IL. RHP Nick Mears and INF Will Craig have opted for the site of choice.
Brewers: Braun scratched the diversity due to the stiffness of his lower back, and Peter took his place.Braun pinch struck out in the eighth.
GOLD PLATFORMS?
Pirates manager Derek Shelton believes Stallings deserves a gold glove for his paintings on the plate.
“If he’s not the wisest guy on the list, I think other people miss him,” Shelton said.”I don’t think anyone gets stuck better, I don’t think anyone gets stuck better, I’d be hard for anyone to throw the ball better.And I think he uses that consistency in his bats.”
Stallings arrived here on Saturday with an attack by Array409 (18 out of 44) in his last 15 games, elevating his season from Array118 to Array328.

Pirates LZ Steven Brault (0-1, 4.80 ERA) faces Brewers RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-2, 3.19 ERA) in the third game of the four-game series. Woodruff, 27, and his wife, Jonie, are expecting their first child, a daughter, Kyler Elise, who must wait until Sept. 4.
