Paul Mainieri hopes to have one more career before leaving his job as an LSU baseball coach. Unfortunately, the leader’s fate is in the hands of his team.
On Monday you can’t get there early enough for the Tigers, as they hope to know if they’ve become a regional one in ’64. This news will come between 11 a. m, and noon on the TV variety show ESPN2.
After a 4–1 loss to Georgia in the SEC tournament that sent the Tigers to pack after just one game, LSU ranks 34-22 overall. The news is that mainieri’s club has an RPI No. 27 opposite the maximum of moments ranked in the calendar. What has the Tigers in the bubble is a 13-17 record in the convention game.
On Friday, D1 Baseball screened LSU at the Austin Regional as the No. 3 with Texas as host. Charlotte hit the No. 2 with Army as No. 4 As one of the last five, LSU sat in a Georgia position at No. 61, ahead of North Carolina, Alabama and Long Beach State in order.
The first five pitches, in order, consisted of Louisville, Ball State, California, Iowa and Baylor. Louisville can no longer as the Cardinals (28-22, 16-16) were eliminated in the ACC tournament, and Baylor (31-20, 11-13) lost his first two games in the Big 12 tournament.
Ball State (34-18, 25-11) can inventory with a four-game series against Ohio Miami this weekend, and the same goes for Iowa (23-18) in a three-game game at Michigan State. (28-25) lost the first game of his finals in No. 9 Oregon, but has two more games on Friday and Saturday.
Baseball America took a similar position on Friday, but placed the Tigers in the Hattiesburg Regional, with Southern Miss as the most sensible seed, Florida State at number 2, followed by LSU and Northeastern. The publication had the Tigers as the last team from Alabama, Louisville State and Long Beach.
Indiana State (28-17, 14-10) is the first team to date BA and plays Friday at the Mountain Valley Convention Tournament. The Sycamores will have to lose twice after winning their first game on Wednesday, as will Southern Illinois (39-18, 15-13). These two groups will meet on Friday, so one will enter the waste range, while the other will be in a smart position.
Florida Atlantic is an emerging team with Baseball America, and the Owls (31-24, 18-14) face Middle Tennessee State in a Friday elimination game at the US-Conference tournament. But it’s not the first time LSU wants Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss or Old Dominion to win this tournament, as everyone is in the race, while the other two aforementioned groups and Western Kentucky would settle for an unforeseen offer that could simply spoil LSU’s hopes.
The state of San Diego (28-15, 20-13) is another team that LSU sees in its three-game series against New Mexico.
These are just a few of the scenarios tiger enthusiasts want to watch as LSU sits at home nervously waiting for Monday’s arrival.
If you’re listening to the tickers on the board this weekend, keep an eye out for Ball State, Iowa, California, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, and San Diego State. any victory puts LSU even more in the bubble.
