Son, Solanke and Spurs: the 3 keys to Tottenham’s first Premier League match

Tottenham begin their 2024/25 Premier League season at Leicester City in the prime of a long opening weekend of the campaign.

Ange Postecoglu will be looking for a positive start to his second season unlike the Australian, confident he can end a 16-year trophy wait on his north London side.

To the newly promoted Foxes it will be a check for Postecoglu and his players, however, Spurs have an impressive record in their first game in recent EPL seasons.

The Sporting News takes a look at how Spurs fared on the opening night of the Premier League with new signing Dominic Solanks set to partner Son Heung-min in attack.

Tottenham against Leicester have lost only one of their last eight Premier League openers, and the club has remained in the EPL since its inception in 1992/93.

A home defeat to Everton at the start of the 2020/21 season is the setback in this run and is the first time they have faced an opening clash with Leicester.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min scored 19 goals in the EPL last season in his first crusade with Harry Kane as his strike partner.

The South Korean has 120 Premier League goals in his Tottenham squad, spread over nine seasons, adding 10 in 8 of them.

However, his opening day record is less impressive, with just one goal scored in Tottenham’s first match in an EPL season since his arrival ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

Son has Tottenham’s last four consecutive EPL openers, but their victory over Manchester City in August 2021 is his only goal.

Solanke’s 19 years in the Premier League at Bournemouth last season convinced Postecoglu to break the Tottenham club’s record for moves to strike a £55m ($71m) deal with the Cherries.

The English foreigner has played only one minute in the Premier League at Chelsea and has only scored one goal in a season and part at Liverpool.

His series duration is shorter than Son’s, with two first games at Bournemouth, but with one goal scored.
