LSU star catcher Ja’Marr Chase plans to retire from the school football season to participate in the NFL draft, told ESPN a source.
Chase, who ranks fourth on Todd McShay’s recent high-ranking list of 50 maximum sensitive professional prospects, informed the team of his decision, no official announcements have been made through the school.
He led the FBS in receiving yards (1780) and touchdowns (20) last season, winning the Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded to the country’s most productive catcher.
CBS Sports was the first to announce the news.
Chase is the third player to retire to the LSU, joining defensive finisher Neil Farrell and corner cornerer Kary Vincent.
LSU now has to dispense with Biletnikoff Prize-winning protector and Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Joe Burrow, who decided on first place in the draft through the Cincinnati Bengals.
Junior Myles Brennan is the favorite to start as a quarterback.
Brennan will have a lot of talented receivers to paint with, plus Terrace Marshall Jr. and Racey McMath.
LSU opens the season on September 26 at Mississippi State.
