Dozens of people have been evacuated from buildings in Southampton after a “suspected unexploded ordnance” was discovered at roadworks in the city centre.
Police closed roads after they discovered near Cumberland Place shortly after 10 a. m. this morning. Military demining experts were called to the scene to ensure safety. The incident ended later.
Southampton City Council said: “There is an emergency incident in the ring road improvement work area (Brunswick Place, Cumberland Place and Havelock Road). Police have been present lately and the ring road and nearby pedestrian lanes have been closed for public protection reasons.

“Unfortunately, this will cause delays in entering and exiting the city centre and will have an effect on the wider network. Plan your trip to avoid this area.
“The closures are gradually being lifted and the road will soon return to the one-way transience system. Thank you for your patience in this incident. “
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: “We were called at 10. 20am. m. de this morning to report that a suspicious unexploded small piece of artillery had been found at roadworks in Southampton.
“The explosive ordnance disposal (OED) team provided and the incident was closed. “
