“Southampton Football Club is very pleased to announce that its captain, James Ward-Prowse, has signed a new five-year contract at St Mary’s,” the club said in a statement.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who has worked with the Saints since the age of eight, accepted the new contract before the 2020/21 season and is now about to extend his with the club beyond the age of 20.
Ward-Prowse, who achieved the feat of betting every minute of the last Premier League campaign, has played a total of 278 times for the national team in all competitions of his career, scoring 24 goals.
Expressing his joy at signing a new contract, Ward-Prowse said Southampton is a “very close” club to his heart.
“Everyone knows that this is a club that is close to my heart,” Ward-Prowse told the club’s official website.
“I started here when I was 8 years old and I only had this purpose of signing up for the first team, and my appreciation for the club is very great, because the other people who make it up and the infrastructure allowed me to keep my dream when I was a kid looking to play professional football,” he added.
Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I’ve already said that Prowsey is a player who is all that is the Southampton Football Club.”
“It’s just his story of evolution as a player here, but also the commitment and attitude he shows in his work.He wasn’t betting so much when I got here, but he listened, and worked on every facet of his game, so he’s gotten to the point where he is now,” he added.(And ME)
