Fire crews are still battling a “deep” blaze near Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium.

It erupted in commercial arenas near the stadium, sending a large plume of smoke into the city’s sky at around 13:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Marine Parade remains closed and others living nearby are asked to keep windows and doors closed and not touch any debris from the fire.

The fire led to the cancellation of the Saints’ championship game against Preston.

After the wind changed direction on Thursday morning, firefighters said, “People who had not been affected before can now see and smell the smoke” and advised everyone affected to follow the recommendation to close windows.

Plastics are understood to have been affected in the fire, which involved more than 100 firefighters, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said. Mark White, the incident commander, said crews were racing to “extinguish the deep hot spots. “”That are still on fire. “

He said they would remain at the scene Thursday and that fire investigators would be in a position to identify the cause.

Firefighters said the rubble of the still-burning building was “quite difficult to reach. “

Southampton City Council has issued a warning about the fire.

On its X account, the authority said: “If you find ashes and debris from the chimney on your property, you are kindly requested to leave them alone. Please alter the material. “

Firefighters said the blaze was brought under control Wednesday night and crews were reduced.

A spokesperson said: “Due to the partial collapse, we sent firefighters to the construction site and applied water outside. “

They said crews hope to put out the blaze sometime Thursday.

All in the former Greenham building in the Central Industrial Area, with 3 of the site’s five sets “fully involved” in the fire.

South Central Ambulance Service said one rider was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.

The stadium will host a match between the Saints and Preston North End at 19:45 GMT.

Southampton Football Club said a new date for the postponed adjustment will be announced in due course.

No decision has yet been made on whether Saturday’s match against Sunderland will take place.

All tickets for Wednesday’s game would be valid for the rescheduled game.

Firefighters said there will most likely be a fire on the domain for a “long period of time. “
