Interim Southampton manager Simon Rusk might get a significant lift on the injury front as his squad prepares to host Liverpool for the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash on Wednesday.
The manager Russell Martin gave him the boot on Sunday after a shameful 5-0 defeat in the house against Tottenham, who marked his 13th defeat in the Premier League in 16 games.
Injured Saints’ shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, who has been sidelined for five matches with a finger injury and served as a pundit for TNT Sports during the disastrous Tottenham encounter, is eyeing a return.
Before Martin left, Ramsdale said: “The finger is becoming more loose, it is coming there. It is too early for this game. I am hunting ahead for (this) week. We have two games in which I hope to play.
“It was difficult to watch. It must have been much more difficult to play. After the paintings you put up, coming back so temporarily and leading 5-0 at halftime, I can’t believe the feeling of playing this half. “
“We have to just forgot about it really quickly, which is easier said than done. I am sure it will be a real tough one for the boys, but we’ve got to go again.
“We have a great game and we can try to reach the semi-finals of the Cup on Wednesday. “
Ramsdale, a new signing for the summer, saw Southampton give way in the first minute at St Mary’s and conceded two more goals in the 14th minute, at the end of five before the break.
Saints Martin coach already felt the heat of the faithful of Santa María, with dissatisfied fans who shouted for the march of the 38 -year -old player before retiring to the locker room while the first part ended with his team.

The heartbreaking defeat 5-0 leaves the Southampton by languishing at the foot of the Premier League table, but the team lives upside down with Liverpool approaching the Carabao Cup clash.
Rusk, who assumed responsibilities for Southampton’s under-21s in July, initiated his coaching journey with Brighton’s academy in 2015 and previously held a managerial post at Stockport before stints with the Football Association and notably Nottingham Forest as a set-piece specialist last season.
Now, after a stint at St Mary’s, Rusk has a bit of time to unite before facing Liverpool in midweek, but the players are eager to make amends.
