Holders Liverpool booked their berth in the League Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Southampton at a wet and windy St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott.
Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick in the second half as Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 3-2, and Sandro Tonali scored twice to lead Newcastle to a 3-1 win over Brentford.
Nunez, who had been flagged earlier in the game by Saints fans for a wild error, appeared on the scoreboard in the 24th minute, pounced after a missed shot through centre-back Jan Bednarek. Núñez put his finger to his lips in a gesture. to the crowd after passing Alex McCarthy.
Elliott doubled the Reds’ lead eight minutes later when he unleashed a low, hard shot from Cody Gakpo’s pass. Cameron Archer pulled one back for the home side in the 59th minute with a curling shot from just inside the box.
Palace rocked Arsenal in the fourth minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta beat Gunners defender Jakub Kiwior to grab a long ball and finish with his side foot.
But Arsenal dominated the second half and Jesus equalised in the 54th minute when Martin Odegaard sent a magnificent ball into the box and the Brazilian sent the ball over Dean Henderson.
Jesus scored his moment in the 73rd minute when Bukayo Saka slid the ball home. He finished his hat-trick 8 minutes later when he collided with an Odegaard ball in the Palace defense before firing past Henderson.
Eddie Nketiah pulled one back for Palace late on when he leapt high to head home past David Raya.
At St James’ Park, Tonali scored in the 9th minute when Nathan Collins’ attempted clearance fell at his feet and he fired a rocket from 20 yards, his first goal since returning at the end of August after a 10-month suspension for violate the rules.
Tonali volleyed in Anthony Gordon’s cross from near the penalty spot just before half-time for his second goal, and Newcastle tripled their lead when Bruno Guimaraes sent a cross for Fabian Schar to head home in the 69th.
Yoane Wissa pulled one back for Brentford in added time, but the game was out of reach.
The last semi-final place is up for grabs on Thursday when Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester United.
