As academics across the country prepare to begin or continue their graduate studies, southampton’s two universities have issued a joint student commitment to highlight the vital role they can play in ensuring their protection and that of others from the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a component of their integration into their institutions, academics are invited to read the commitment, which is now part of each university’s student letter or code of conduct, and to ensure that they perceive their daily work at this difficult time.
Professor Mark E. Smith CBE, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, commented: “The reopening of the University of Southampton is of great importance for the schooling of thousands of new and on-the-fly academics. This will allow us to open our laboratories to resume our cutting-edge studies and the return of academics will provide an indispensable seasoning for the city’s economy.
“We have worked tirelessly to create a safe COVID environment in which our students can browse and live, and where our staff can work. We make it clear to all of our students that they will have to show respect to our local communities [Southampton and Winchester] and adhere to our student status and the most recent coVID-19 government address and recommendation.

Professor Karen Stanton, vice-chancellor at Solent University, says: “We ask our academics to maintain this commitment to protect themselves and others, as well as to help keep our universities open in these difficult times.
“Our purpose is to exercise as many graduates as they can to achieve their ambitions and gain advantages both in the industry and in the community. In addition to giving them the opportunity to gain the wisdom and skills they want to succeed in the career of their choice, we help guilty citizens and leaders in the long run.
If academics do not meet expected standards, universities may have to undergo disciplinary procedures. Both establishments will continue to work hard with local police to resolve problems while standing up and minimizing the dangers to Southampton net paints as a whole.
