Ministry Open to Partnerships to Create Sustainable Pathways for Aspiring Athletes
The Honourable Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, said the branch is committed to encouraging the progression of grassroots play to ensure the continuity of the game in the country.
He did so during the Southampton Powered Community Hub stopover at his workplace on Wednesday. The Hub is affiliated with Southampton FC of England.
Senator Enoh highlighted the central role that local progression plays in the long-term of Nigerian football. He expressed the ministry’s commitment to work collaboratively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to drive progression projects at the local level.

The delegation from the UK-based Southampton Powered Community Hub was made up of prominent members, including Ed Kilby, Southampton FC’s Football Development Coordinator; Ben Sharp, football and games coach; and David Doherty, CEO of TNUK. They presented their collaborative vision to promote grassroots play in Nigeria.
Also attending the assembly were Eng. Zuofa, Folarin Adebule and Leon Osahon, full members of the team responsible for coordinating Sports Edu, whose objective is to train young players, referees and coaches. The exercise allows Nigerians from other fitness centers on site and virtually to do exercise sessions, develop skills and employment within the center and turn them into sports exports.
Senator Enoh praised the expertise and commitment shown through the Southampton team and recognised the contribution they can make to grassroots progress in Nigeria.
In his statement, Senator Enoh said: “The Ministry of Sports Development is committed to pursuing the progress of grassroots football as a cornerstone of the expansion of Nigerian football. We collaborate with esteemed partners such as Southampton Powered Community Hub, whose determination aligns with our vision. capacity-building at the local level.

The Southampton delegation shared insights into their successful grassroots development models currently in Abuja and Lagos.They expressed their eagerness to start two more hubs in Port Harcourt and Calabar for the advancement of football in Nigeria.
Enoh added that the Ministry of Sports Development will remain open to partnerships with relevant stakeholders, with the aim of creating sustainable pathways for aspiring athletes and the wider sports landscape in Nigeria.
Southampton FC is lately the parent club of two Nigerians: Joseph Ayodele Aribo and Paul Ebere Onuachu (Paul is on loan at Trabzonspor), who are in the Ivory Coast’s AFCON with Nigeria.
