LONDON – Tottenham Hotspur signed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ right-back Matt Doherty on a four-year contract, annoud North London on Sunday.
The main financial points of the movement were not revealed, but british media reported that the Spurs had paid 331. 95 billion rands ($20 million) to save the 28-year-old Irish international.
“I’m incredibly satisfied with Array . . . I’m very proud to sign up for such a wonderful club,” Doherty told the Spurs website. “With the duration of the Array club . . . and the manager, once I knew there was interest, it was obvious to me to move to London.
“My stay in the Wolves was Array . . . But when I come here, I feel like I’m going to take my game and my career to the next level. “
Doherty, who joined the Wolves in 2010, played 50 times in all competitions last season and scored seven goals when they finished seventh in the league and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.
Doherty is expected to compete with Serge Aurier for a spot in the starting lineup, the Ivorian defender has been linked to a move to AC Milan in Serie A.
“I hate to bet against him (Doherty), so I’m so pleased to keep playing against him!I’m so pleased to have it,” said Spurs coach Jose Mourinho.
Spurs have also signed midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Joe Hart in the movement window as Mourinho watches the team forward in his first full season in command.
The Premier League season began on 12 September and the Spurs welcomed Everton in their first game a day later.
