Tottenham Hotspur has signed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ right-back Matt Doherty on a four-year contract, North London announced Sunday.
The main financial points of the measure were not revealed, but British media reported that the Spurs had paid 15 million pounds ($20 million) to save the 28-year-old Irish international.
“I’m incredibly satisfied with Array . . . I’m very proud to sign up for such a wonderful club,” Doherty told the Spurs website.
“With the duration of the club . . . and the coach, once I knew there was interest, made it clear to me the move to London.
“My stay at the Wolves is fantastic . . . But when I come here, I feel like my game and my career will take you to the next level. “
Doherty signed for the Wolves in 2010, played 50 times in all competitions last season and scored seven goals when they finished seventh in the league and reached the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
Doherty is expected to compete with Serge Aurier for a spot in the starting lineup, the Ivorian defender has been linked to a move to AC Milan in Serie A.
“I hate to bet against him (Doherty). So I’m so pleased to keep playing against him!I’m so pleased to have it,” said Spurs coach Jose Mourinho.
The Spurs have also recruited midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Joe Hart in the movement window as Mourinho watches the team’s striker in his first full season in command.
The 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL) season began on 12 September and the Spurs received Everton in their first game a day later.
