The first series of our official Off The Shelf podcast featured a library of Spurs stories from our club legends. In this series, we review those 30 episodes to tell you some of the stories our legends have told us: their lives with the Spurs, in their words.
In the final story of the series, and with our first home match of the 2024/25 Premier League crusade against Everton on the horizon (Saturday, 3:00pm UK), we return to episode 14 with the winner of the 2008 League Cup, Paul Robinson, the fan favorite and goalkeeper whose performances in a Spurs shirt temporarily installed him as England’s number one.
In fact, football fate smiled on Robbo on the day he signed in May 2004 – he told us how he met his football idol, Neville Southall, at White Hart Lane while doing his official photo shoot!
Southall was at Everton for 17 years, from 1981 to 1998, and won two titles, two FA Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup during his time at Goodison. He was also capped 92 times for Wales.
Here’s how it all happened. . .
175 appearances, 2004-2008
“It’s a genuine photo shoot for a new signing, you know, lifting your top on the White Hart Lane pitch, and Neville there! He works a lot with other charities and he’s there at White Hart Lane, leading a their kids on a trip to the stadium So, they were visiting and I said: “Wow, that’s Neville Southall” All the kids said: “Oh, it’s Paul Robinson, he’s just signed for Leeds, he’s the new signing” . They all wanted to communicate with me, and they probably had no idea what Neville had done because he is so modest, so humble, that he obviously doesn’t sit down and tell those kids or other people he works with what he does. of the football greats, they had no interest in him or knew very little about him, and all I was looking for was to tell them. He signed the shirt I was holding on the field, he signed it for me, and I still have it! today.
