Storm Casualty Toll Rises to 116 in Southern Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) — The death toll from deadly storms in Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen to 116, the civil defense firm said Friday.

Another 143 people were missing, 756 were injured and some 400,000 were evacuated, according to the agency’s latest update.

A total of 1,947,372 more people were affected by the storms, while 70,863 were rescued by security forces and rescuers, the company said.

Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre, the state capital, is out of service after the Guaiba River flooded the city.

Since April 29, rains and floods have caused the worst weather tragedy in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, the main agricultural and livestock producer on the border with Argentina and Uruguay, where more than 437 municipalities have suffered the storms.
