BBC Scotland has quietly amended a report that, like many major media outlets, claimed that UEFA had fined Celtic for flying the Palestinian flag at Celtic Park during the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, October 25.
Both Celtic Star and Video Celts publish articles ahead of UEFA’s official announcement that Celtic would escape a fine, this time similar to the Palestinian flag demonstration organised through the Green Brigade. Celtic have asked their supporters NOT to wave the flags, possibly fearing that a hefty fine will result in an increase in the volume of fines that have accumulated.
So when news broke of Celtic PLC’s Annual General Meeting, detailing three fines against Celtic totalling around £25,000, BBC Scotland, Football Scotland and other media outlets were quick to claim that the fines were related to the Green Brigade’s display of the Palestinian flag. .
Football Scotland said:
“The larger of the three fines will charge the club €17,500 and is related to a ‘provocative message of an offensive nature’ and is said to have been through the display of the Palestinian flag.
The Celtic Star, covering the morning news, read our original article from the day before, which said that UEFA would NOT fine Celtic for enthusiasts waving the Palestinian flag. We even asked a few other people to dig up our history as something “Many Colin Nish” and other Celtic sites pointed out our “mistake”.
If we had been wrong, we would have had no problem raising our hands and apologizing. Or maybe what we’ve done is go back to our article to rewrite it a bit and say that UEFA will fine Celtic Blah Blah. Right from the start. . .
Because that’s precisely what the BBC Scotland did, cutting off its report on the fining of Celtic through UEFA for displaying the Palestinian flag and rephrasing the content to make it more accurate, just like the one that aired in The Celtic Star newspaper in the morning.
And at the end of the BBC article, they added this little sentence.
“CORRECTION 22 November 2023: This article originally incorrectly reported that Celtic were fined after fans displayed Palestinian flags. UEFA has since shown that this is not the explanation for the fine,” BBC website.
Or perhaps more accurately, they had read something quite different in the text of UEFA’s announcement, which was wishful thinking on their part and on the part of the other media outlets who were making the same interpretation.
And ironically, just below this CORRECTION, they have a Celtic branded banner that says NEED TO KNOW with text and then says “Our Celtic policy is getting bigger than ever – here’s everything you want to know to make sure you You’ll never miss it. ” one moment. “
Many followers will have read this erroneous data and will not be aware of the correction issued via the BBC (who re-reads an article they read the day before?). So it shapes debates, influences opinions and ultimately, in this case, sustains and perhaps even worsens the internal clash at Celtic. That in itself creates more stories, so it is truly an insight into his evil.
It might be a better idea to stick to Celtic’s media fans. The Celtic Star’s report on this story, with the same facts as the mainstream media, was accurate, fair and stands the test of time, even 24 hours later!
