Southampton’s match against Preston tonight was postponed after a fire broke out next to St Mary’s Stadium.
Fire crews are battling the blaze that broke out shortly after 1:00 p. m. this afternoon and affected four commercial venues at Marine Parade, Southampton.
It is known precisely what caused the fire.
Southampton FC were due to face Preston tonight in the league, as the Saints continue their rise.
The football club said the event had to be postponed because the fire “significantly disturbed” the area.
They said the resolution was taken after discussions with the local government and emergency services.
They added: “We are grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, and while we appreciate the sadness fans might feel, we hope they understand the desire to prioritise the protection of fans and any of the clubs. “
“The match will be postponed to a new date, to be announced in due course, and all tickets for tonight’s match will be valid for the rescheduled match. “
Several nearby roads were closed and other people were asked to keep windows closed for smoking.
Footage showed the giant chimney spewing black smoke rising from the top of the nearby football stadium.
