Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following a 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League, marking the team’s fourth successive loss since returning from the winter break.
The defeat left Dortmund in a precarious position, tenth in the Bundesliga, 20 times leader, the Bayern Munich, after 18 games. The bad shape of the club spread to national competitions, and the Dortmund also left the DFB Pokal in the second round after a defeat against the Wolfsburg in October.
The decision to join the tactic with Sahin was communicated to the team at their hotel in Italy on Tuesday afternoon. Sahin and his staff left separately, and the team is expected to return to Germany on Wednesday. An emergency meeting was held the next morning to verify the resolution; no successor has yet been named.
Sahin, 36, took over as head coach in June 2024, replacing Edin Terzic, who left the club by mutual consent following Dortmund’s loss to Real Madrid in the 2024 Champions League final. Having previously served as Terzic’s assistant since December 2023, Sahin returned to Dortmund after managing Turkish side Antalyaspor for 26 months. However, his tenure at Dortmund has been marred by disappointing results, leading to his departure.
Several applicants are already in the context to upgrade Sahin, with notable names adding Erik Ten Hag, Roger Schmidt and Sebastian Hoeneß.
It is said that Hag, recently in Manchester United, is willing to perform the task, but has made it clear that he will only sign a long -term agreement. The Dutchman is not interested in playing the role of “firefighter” to temporarily stabilize the club.
Schmidt, who was recently in Benfica, could take the reins with a short -term contract of six months. However, it is believed to be a good option for the long -term club.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Hoeneß, of the VFB Stuttgart, is a candidate interested in Dortmund. However, Hoeneß will not be available until summer, since it is still under contract with Stuttgart. Dortmund may be looking to buy his contract, as long as Hoeneß also needs to take the step.
As Dortmund continue to search for a new coach, tensions will be high over the right candidate to straighten out the club’s fortunes, whether in the Bundesliga or European competitions.
