The Estonian documentary won an award at MIFF and an Oscar (‘contentCtrl.commentsTotal’)

This Sunday saw Estonian director Eeva Mägi’s short film “The Weight of All the Beauty” (Estonian title: “Süda Sõrve sääres”) win the best short documentary prize at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). The prize gives the documentary the right to run for an Oscar without a national competition.

“It was a great marvel because” “S’rve Seres” is, in a sense, a very local documentary, filmed in the only village and starring a single character. However, it is more evidence than a very private universal film and can affect others in the other aspect of the world. Eeva’s films come from a very private position and have incredible courage to look those things directly in the eye,” documentary maker Liis Nimik told ERR.

Nimik added that running for an Oscar is an even greater marvel for the film team and they plan to participate in the entire Oscar rally.

Only one Estonian film has reached the Oscars like this before: Ksenija Ohhapkina’s “Immortal” (“Surematu”) from last year.

“The Weight of All Beauty” is a poetic documentary about men whose souls were full of beauty, fire and energy, but also of boundless loneliness. These men lived in the village of Pura in Saaremaa, saaremaa, where their only playmate was the cunning drinking demon. The main character Villi tells how the demon led his friends to accompany him.
