“The first time we put the [hockey] helmet on the dummy, the lab technician turned to us and said, ‘Get ready for this, because it’s not like the football shot. ‘

Last summer, Glenn Hunter of Dallas Innovates wrote about the G8RSkin, a balaclava-like helmet designed to be worn under a helmet to decrease concussions in contact sports. It is manufactured and sold through Dallas-based G8RTech, founded through CEO Carter Hogg, a Johns Hopkins University football player. Carter was encouraged to expand this product after his brother FJ suffered a concussion while finishing his football career at a school football convention championship game.

In November, we talked about G8RTech’s launch of its initial product for ice hockey players, called G8RSkin Ice. Since then, the company has continued to improve its technology, offering a lighter helmet, the G8RSkin Shiesty, which is five millimeters thick and weighs only 8 ounces.

A new article from Texas Monthly claims that the startup’s new G8RSkin product reduces the risk of concussion by up to 79%, according to an assessment by the Southern Impact Research Center, which found that the device provides maximum effective coverage against the effects on the body’s maximum sensitivity helmet.

Hogg told TM that he worries that many other young people will avoid contact sports and not enjoy the transformative effect they have.

“People are choosing not to play those games,” he told TM. “But ask everyone who’s played and they’ll tell you that it has a profound effect on your life and the way you function, take on upheavals and paints in combination as a team. There are so many amazing kinds of life that the game can teach you.

The recent death of hockey player Adam Johnson following an incident on the ice in England has raised awareness of the risks of the sport. Now, a Dallas startup led by a 20-year-old school athlete has introduced a solution based on Kevlar and other proprietary materials. Their goal: to cause concussions and lacerations on the ice.

Today, Sheriff, a 22-year veteran of the Arlington Police Department, and his wife Vanessa Sheriff, a nurse and retired paramedic, are looking for even more tactics to serve the city, this time, on ice.
