After being eliminated by the Bills last week, Jordan Poyer joins a departmental rival. The veteran safety is signing with the Dolphins, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It will be a one-year deal for Poyer.
Security was expected to earn $5. 5 million in 2024 and was tied to a cap of $7. 72 million. With a roster bonus expected later in March, the Bills have to let go of their defensive stalwart. The move created $5. 72 million of salary cap area for Buffalo while creating a $2 million dead money charge.
The former seventh-rounder tested his price on the open market last offseason. Having not gained much outside interest, it agreed to a two-year, $12. 5 million buyback from Buffalo. It’s his third contract with the organization, with Poyer originally signing. with the Bills in 2017 before signing an extension in 2020.
Poyer earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and earned a Pro Bowl invitation the following season. After racking up nine interceptions and 17 passes deflected in that span, the totals dropped to 0 and 4 in 2023. Professional Football Focus ranked Poyer 46th out of 95 rankings in 2023, the second year in a row that he finished near the middle of the pack to his position.
Given the relatively giant elegance of free agents, Poyer’s declining production and the veteran’s growing age, he wasn’t expected to get a long-term commitment from any team. The Dolphins are a logical place for a touchdown given that DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones have either reached free agency. The team has re-signed Elijah Campbell, but he comes in more as a replacement. The Dolphins can now, with a bit of luck, score Poyer against Jevon Holland.
