Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella “ghosted” the war in midfield as Italy withdrew from Euro 2024 in Switzerland.
This is the opinion of today’s print edition of the Turin newspaper Tuttosport, FCInterNews.
During the organisational level of this summer’s European Championship, Barella was quick to announce himself as the key player in the Italian midfield.
The 27-year-old Inter midfielder shone in the Azzurri’s first match of this category against Albania.
And Italy would still want Barella to be in theirs if they had a positive tournament in the round of 16.
For club and country, the former Cagliari midfielder is a driving force.
Few midfielders in European football can offer the combination of endless running and technical refinement as Barella does.
But there wasn’t much of that in last night’s disastrous match on the 16th against Switzerland.
As Tuttosport points out, Barella appeared to take a blow to the thigh at the start of last night’s match.
Then, it will depend on how the 27-year-old played for the rest of the match.
Barella was unable to keep up with the Swiss midfield duo of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler.
This was clearly seen in the first Swiss goal.
It was Freuler who entered the Italian area. And Barella the player who failed to withstand the Bologna midfielder’s attacking play.
However, it is only an iconic moment of the Barella evening as a whole.
The 27-year-old did not have a combative presence as Switzerland dominated ownership from the start.
And when Barella had the ball returned to him, he could not cause anything dangerous.
Finally, Barella, tired, came on in the second half. And he did so without having controlled to leave his mark on the match.
