When developers were looking to buy Gloria Blake’s land in the pocket of West University’s Southampton Place, he liked what he heard about a network of luxury seniors with wonderful prospects and services.
He enjoyed it so much that he wanted to move. And that’s precisely what she and her husband Glen, a retired dentist, did.
The town of Southampton opened its doors and the Blakes moved in early June.
“It was the moment when the couple settled into the community,” she says, “and we love it. My husband is an Aggie, so we have unit 1212 (due to the culture of the 12th guy in Texas AM). It also has surprising insights into everything from NRG Stadium to the Galleria, from its two-bedroom, two-bathroom corner unit with floor-to-ceiling windows. He would also despise the school he has had for 51 years, The Southampton Montessori School.
“Or we love dominance,” he says. “My husband and I can walk to the shops of Rice Village and the wonderful restaurants.” The domain is also minutes from the Museum District, Rice University, Hermann Park and texas Medical Center.
The Village in Southampton offers self-catering apartments, service and souvenir care apartments with high-end features, adding quartz countertops, open floor plans and individual temperature control. There are nice red lounges, a gym and an indoor pool. Activities include yoga, tai chi and pilates, as well as hiking groups, e-book clubs, weekly movie nights, cooking classes, evening cards and board games.
“The 9th floor has a sublime dining room and a small bistro for coffee and snacks,” Gloria says. All foods are prepared with new ingredients and focus on healthy and delicious options.
