A previously closed East Cleveland post office may be converted into apartments after a successful building permit application.
Recent plans submitted through RJJR Properties envisage the former Lingdale Post Office on High Street and a first floor duplex in 3 apartments.
A planning officer’s report described the building as being situated at the end of a terrace on a street with a mix of residential and commercial properties. He said the loss of advertising use of the building is not considered to have a considerable effect on the wishes of the local community, with a convenience store located 4 doors down.
Referring to the impact on neighbors’ amenities, he said, “The proposal would not have a significant impact on neighboring occupants.
“The provision of apartments will have to be subject to the situations necessary to control the structural effects and also between dwellings to mitigate noise. “
There were also no disturbances in terms of road safety. The scale and design were also deemed appropriate and that the proposals would “respect the character of the site and its surroundings,” according to the report when making the plans, permission was granted.
When the village’s old post office closed in 2019, the post office said the move was part of an ongoing modernization and proposed moving the facility to a local pharmacy in a bid to “safeguard sustainable services. “
But local councillor Steve Kay said this had never happened before and lamented the fact that “such a giant town has so few facilities”. Cllr Kay also said he believes the old building that’s lately being drawn in blue may have been sold recently.
